Women’s Film Series- “Lackawanna Blues”

February 16

The Missouri River Regional Library invites you to join them for a Saturday afternoon out. Come enjoy a free film about women, followed by a discussion. Light refreshments will be served. “Lackawanna Blues,” starting at 2 p.m. on the second floor of the library, will show on Saturday, January 12. This warm and vibrant drama is an inspiring story of coming of age, of a mother/son love that transcends biological ties, and of an extraordinary woman who built a community and circumvented segregation in her own determined way. Like a good blues song, the film strikes notes that are painful but beautiful, ones that remain alive to both the heartbreaks and joys of life. Call (573) 634-6064, ext. 235 for more information or to make reservations.

Osuwa Taiko Japanese Drumming

February 29

At 7 p.m. on Friday, February 29, the Community Concert Association will present Osuwa Taiko Japenese Drumming at the Miller Performing Arts Center. Grandmaster Daihachi Oguchi of Suwa, Japan, formed the original Osuwa Taiko. In 1986, when Oguchi visited St. Louis (sister city of Suwa) with a generous donation of hand-made drums, he helped form the first Osuwa Taiko in St. Louis. The group consisted of local youngsters but was disbanded several years later when members went away to college. St. Louis Osuwa Taiko was restarted at Washington University in 1996 with the return of Joe Kimura, one of the founding members of the original St. Louis Osuwa Taiko. The reorganized group started with five members. Since then, the group has grown and has performed at numerous events and occasions throughout the Midwest. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $8 for students; no reserved seating. For more information about the group, go to www.stlouis.osuwa.taiko.cc.
